Hey, I have a question that came ti mind during the antibiotic / antiviral discussion when you were explaining how soap works (which I loved). What does hydrogen peroxide do?
ReplyDeleteGreat question. Hydrogen peroxide, like soap, disrupts the cell membrane of bacteria. However, hydrogen peroxide does it slightly differently, and it involves steeling electrons to oxidize the cell membrane. Why doesn't it kill our cells? Well, our cells have an enzyme that turns hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2), but the bacteria lack this enzyme.
